West Sussex Book Award November 2012

Posted on by Barbara Mitchelhill

It’s always a pleasure to travel down to Sussex.  For one thing, it’s a long journey – and I love the opportunity to sit back with a cup of coffee and read a good book (in this case Sarah Thornhill by Kate Grenville).  I was travelling down for the West Sussex Book Award for which Run Rabbit Run has been nominated and I was to stay there for four days staying in a very comfortable hotel in Hickstead

The good thing is that you’re treated so well.  Every morning, a friendly librarian arrived at the hotel and drove me to a comprehensive school which was hosting the event for four or five primary schools.  In the afternoon, we would move on to another area of West Sussex and another comprehensive school.  Lunch happened in the middle and was splendid and varied.  I can’t tell you how well organised it was.  It all ran so smoothly and the children were a delight with an amazing range of questions.

I must mention that every afternoon, when I returned to the Hickstead Hotel, I treated myself to afternoon tea with a scone, clotted cream and jam.  This is not my usual routine (I’m lucky if I have a biscuit) but the scones were made by the chef and I can honestly say they were the best scones I have ever tasted.

Thank you West Sussex Book Award for a wonderful week.
